    • I love discord haha, but I can understand it feels a bit convoluted, especially the larger servers. I enjoy the small to medium sized ones the most and tbh I'm only active in my own server lol (and Mike's as well). But I'm pretty okay with jumping into a convo midway so I don't really mind if I can't find the beginning. I think my brain works best with a set amount of subcategories and then just talk in those if it fits instead of a million different topics (which is sometimes the case on a forum)

On Mike's server for instance you can find me in maybe 5 subcategories, I don't even check the other ones. Book hauls, currently reading, house of the dragon, and food & drinks. That way even a big server remains doable.

I absolutely hate Discord. Conversations are always happening that don't include you, the spam is unbelievable... personal conversations are just so much better one-on-one, in my opinion. I'm in a few Discord servers - the Indie Accords and Dom's Book Club. Otherwise I haven't been able to get into them. I tried Mike's Book Reviews Discord channel but I couldn't get into it. I also tried Slowly Red's and had a difficult time getting anywhere with that, even though it's a grimdark server so you'd think I'd be home, but I just think there's too many people talking about so many books that I haven't read lol

I tried Mike's server last year. It's almost impossible to keep up with what's going on and found myself endlessly scrolling trying to find the beginning of conversations.

The Hand That Casts the Bone is good, funnier than I expected.

Priest of Bones and that series is pretty good

Nice. I keep pushing Priest of Bones off because I only own the first book lol but I really should get into it soon.

      Fall TBR

Expanse - Cibola Burn, Nemisis Games, Babylons Ashes

The Wrathbringer by Christopher G Brenning

Hero of Ages by Brandon Sanderson

      Royal Assassin by Robin Hobb

Trial of Ashmount by John Palladino

Orbit of the Sirens by TA Bruno

Darkness that Comes Before by R Scott Bakker

....and whatever other inspiration comes my way in terms of self pub.

I just started Hellborn King today by Christopher G. Brenning. Finished the prologue, thought it was interesting - looking forward to reading more. I've read Hero of Ages, but like all things Sanderson I've noticed that I just don't remember any of his books lol. I found the Expanse to not be my thing and Royal Assassin was my favorite book in the Farseer Trilogy, I think. Palladino is a shit writer getting far too much press lately and Orbit of Sirens is something I really want to read eventually. R Scott Bakker I've heard is far too intellectual for me. I don't know why I just went through your TBR and offered my opinions on everything but I have so that's that.

It is horrendous looking and clunky. Reminds me of the old MIRC chat.

I use it to play role playing games and I have found a decent group. If it wasn’t for that, I wouldn’t use it at all.

Yes! Takes me back to mIRC

    • I decided to give Discord another try, and while there are some great people on the platform the app is still really annoying.

The format isn't my favorite, it reminds me of a chat room from the 90's. There are a TON of notifications, so you spend time muting channel after channel or server after server just so you won't get a notification every five fucking minutes. I'm limiting myself to just a couple of servers because I don't have the time to participate in too many but so far I'm still not the biggest fan.

I'll continue using it only because I'm a Patreon supporter of The Fantasy Nuttwork and Michael R. Fletcher and there are some perks on Discord for people who contribute. Otherwise I'd not bother using it.

I do feel at home on Slowly Red's server, too.

      Have you read Sanderson before?

    • Not yet. It's on my list but so far I have only seen it in paperback. I'm hoping for a hardcover edition in the future.
