Jag 796 Posted August 27, 2021 (edited) Don't you have a 401K? Or some other kind of retirement fund? You are basically paying someone to do something you could do better yourself, because you actually care what happens to it. If ANYONE loses it all then they are doing it wrong, and taking risks that should not be taken. I do some high risk things from time to time, but only with 1-5% of my portfolio and a deep understanding of the risks involved. All I do is look for stocks that I think are undervalued, or may have some kind of catalyst coming. I belong to secret forum on Reddit with a couple very smart people and sometimes I follow those plays. 2 things you can do with little or no risk. 1. paper trade. Download TOS, set up an account and I'll get you started with some stocks or strategies. 2. Once you feel comfortable mechanically or have had some moderate success on the paper trade (fake money real stock market), start with as little of 500 of your own money and play it slow. One of my favorite market related quotes is “The stock market is a device to transfer money from the impatient to the patient.” I got into it because I thought...why am I letting someone else plan my retirement? Why am I paying someone else for 3-5% gains when I can double it just by paying a little bit of attention? It opened up a whole new world of raid bosses that had patterns to discover and defeat. The guy who got me started taught me to play options and I lost. Don't start with options, they are the most advanced and high risk tool there is. Just pick one or two companies you know and buy some of their stock. That's how you start. I would recommend starting with the goal of taking 500$ and turning it into a safety net. Once you have built your own safety net then think about other things. If you can't afford to lose because you have no safety net...what are you going to do about it? Pasanda 1,012 Posted September 6, 2021 I have a state pension, which is just enough to survive on, and a career pension, which will leave me reasonably comfortable. Surely there must be some element of risk in what you're doing Jag? Could your investments weather a serious economic crash? There are no pensions anymore in the US. So if the market crashes so does everyone's 401k. There is always risk in investment. It just needs to be managed as best as possible. From what I have seen, barring a great depression, you can afford the losses, but you can't miss the gains. Because even when things drop they don't seem to drop below the gains. I mostly look for and buy already devalued or undervalued stock then sell options on them from time to time. When you lose that way, you don't really lose money, you lose time, because the time value of stocks is always going up. Every crash ends in a new record high. I also put away a % into volatility stock as a hedge so when the inevitable crashes come there is profit there as well. Risk management is the foundation of the game. 1 Pasanda reacted to this Quote People are stupid; given proper motivation, almost anyone will believe almost anything. Pasanda 1,012 Posted September 9, 2021 Thanks. If i did it at all, it would need to be surplus money that wasn't needed for anything else. I'm not sure i'd have the courage to invest money that was essential for liquidity, survival, or necessary elements of our future. I did try to start up an investment club with neighbours and acquaintances a few years back, but there wasn't sufficient interest. I was interested in investing in more than stocks and share too - Things such as antiques, art and wine were also on my list. But i think i was alone in that. Jolien Reads 811 Posted September 20, 2021 I've been playing Diablo III and Horizon Zero Dawn on PC. I used to play Baldur's Gate as a kid and after a long pause I played Pillars of Eternity a couple of years ago. I'm now getting back into gaming, so I'll have to buy a PC in a couple of months (currently using my husbands to see if I will continue to enjoy it before I make the purchase). I played Diablo 3 on XBox 360 and really liked it. I hadn't gamed in quite awhile prior to getting the xbox. Horizon Zero Dawn I have on PS4.. AWESOME game. I still play it (workin on NG+) due to Frozen Wilds dlc. I having a gaming PC, but use it primarily for recording music. Been looking at New World, but unfortunately I compare every PC game to DAOC and am always left feeling dissapointed lol. 1 Jolien Reads reacted to this

How far through HZD and how are you finding it? @Elovia had been playing fairly recently, but refuses to close down his report of how he found it overall. I really enjoyed it. 1 Jolien Reads reacted to this Quote May the Force Live Long and Prosper. Cynical Optimist
Pasanda 1,012 Posted September 20, 2021 Recently finished Disco Elysium - amazing game. Quite short though. Flipping between Control and Death Stranding. Neither is really grabbing me yet, although DS looks amazing. Quote May the Force Live Long and Prosper. Cynical Optimist

I really enjoyed it. I'm not that far in... Need to go and check but I think I have 10 hours played. I'm liking it a lot but I'm still getting used to using the mouse to see and the arrows to walk. I'm only used to things like Diablo and Baldur's Gate where you use the mouse to move and that's it. I never had to aim. When I played Tomb Raider 20 years ago she aimed automatically haha. So I'm still learning all of that and can't really compare to other games that play the same way. The story is really nice so far. 1 Brad reacted to this

The story is really nice so far. Just to say that, purely from my option natch, it's worth it. Firstly It's the basic movement mechanic for pretty much all 1st person and 3rd games. It wipes the floor with console controllers. And secondly. It's an excellent game. Quote May the Force Live Long and Prosper. Cynical Optimist
Pasanda 1,012 Posted September 27, 2021 Tried to get into a few new games. Control (game play feels a bit mindless, but only an hour or 2 in). Death Stranding (Stunning game to look at, but not feeling it yet. Suspect it'll get very samey). Kena Bridge of Spirits (has great reviews, but i can't see why). Nothing much grabbing me. I reinstalled Witcher 3, just to check it out, and am having a lot of fun. I've installed a HD textures mod, but honestly cannot tell. Still, graphically, it holds up. Not a spot on Death Stranding for sure. But good enough. Quote May the Force Live Long and Prosper. Cynical Optimist
Jag 796 Posted September 28, 2021 Have you ever tried the Total War series? War-hammer 2. We just got ti this weekend and we like it so far. Did you ever play Dragons Dogma when we were talking about it back in the day? Assassins Creed: Odyssey is good too. Just a few of my favorites if you are on the hunt for something fun. Cheers for the tips. I'm not a big fan of those RTS-type games. If i'm honest, i don't tend to stray too far from 1st person RPG's. Disco Elysium was very much an exception. Saying that, i have Age of Empires II - Dawn of the Dukes and Humankind to try out. Both of which I think are both RTS-type games??? Quote May the Force Live Long and Prosper. Jag 796 Posted September 29, 2021 I would not call Total war an RTS because there is no real time. This is why I like it. I would say it's much closer to Might and Magic than it is to Starcraft. Total war is pure "Art of War" tactics. You can pause at any time to give commands and reassess how things are going. It's the evolution of digital chess and good for keeping your mind sharp IMO. The battles are pure battles, no resource generation. That happens on the world map. Quote People are stupid; given proper motivation, almost anyone will believe almost anything. Jozua B 181 Posted July 1, 2022 The issue with this topic for me and I think a lot of people is... like with books I am all over the place all the time. I try a lot of games over the year and always go back to the same things like Soulsbourne/Diablo/Final Fantasy/Age of Empires/Tony Hawk. For example: I've finished Dark Souls 1 on ps3/4, xbox360 and pc (two of those 100%) and I'm still looking at the Switch and Xbox one version... It's like comfort food, you like what you like. So what am I playing right now...everything 😆. 2 Steve and Jag reacted to this

Jozua B 181 Posted July 20, 2022 I haven't been playing anything because I was building a new pc... can't wait to get to testing my machine XD, but don't have the time these coming days because of planned vacation in Normandy 😅. Just wanted to say that if people are trying to build a gaming pc, right now is a great time with the prices being the lowest in 2 years! And I can help with the selecting of parts 😉.
