Berserk In 2023

Cause I don't have enough to read already, picked up the first volume of Berserk on sale at a local comic shop.

Anyone up for a group read starting in a couple of months with livestreams?

I have never read any manga but eventually I think I’d like to give it a shot. From what I’ve heard I don’t think Beserk would be what I try first, I think it would just be too dark and not really what I’m looking for out of a medium like that. But I’ve heard it’s fantastic, so I hope you enjoy it. Also hesitant to get into manga bc it can get really expensive from what I’ve heard

I've been wanting to read Berserk, but have felt somewhat intimidated by it, so maybe reading it together will help! I'd love to read along with you Steve. How many volumes are you thinking for January ? (Also volume as in individual volumes, or omnibus edition volumes?)

It looks like each omnibus volume is a bind up of 3ish manga volumes, so one omnibus volume a month should be doable i think. I would like to start slow since I keep hearing about how dark it is, and would like to figure out a pacing that works. Does this work for you?

I’m good with that! Should we plan for February sometime? Or when would work for you?

I've read it a while ago but I received the first volume of the deluxe editions for the holiday, so a re-read is in order soon, I think. I have it and Vagabond now to look forward to.

Yes! February sounds perfect! We could try one (manga) volume a week starting the first week of Feb. and slow down if needed after the first three volumes ?

Sounds good! I’m guessing one volume is 30 pages or so?

Oh I think a volume is about 220 pages. Does that work? Alternatively we could divvy up by chapters per week

About 200 pages seems right. They don't take that long to read and you'll find yourself burning through them much quicker than a graphic novel.

I’m definitely in on this group read! Just read my first manga (Vineland Saga) and actually liked it quite a bit.

Either works for me. I suspect i might be more disciplined about 1 volume a week if we have actual dates for the first couple of discussions. 😀

I would be down to give Berserk a try.  Never read manga before and there is always a first for everything.  Count me in for February.

Berserk is one of my top manga reads. I've read it 3 times before  but it's been a long time since my last read and I've definitely never done it continuously enough to be able to well compare the different periods and arcs of the story from both an art and narrative prospective.

I think it would be really fun to re-read it and discuss it.

And here I was thinking I was going to read it alone! This is exciting stuff!

A chapter per week meetup is great with me. Just need to decide on a day and time that works for everyone. I'm guessing weekend mornings U.S. time would be best? Sunday mornings work?
